The Good Man
The Good Man
Last month we considered the Virtuous Woman from Proverbs 31. We discussed her rarity and value. The Good Man we find in Psalm 112 is, unfortunately, also a rare find these days. Please consider what the scriptures say about him.
Psalm 112:5-10
5 A good man deals graciously and lends; He will guide his affairs with discretion.
6 Surely he will never be shaken; The righteous will be in everlasting remembrance.
7 He will not be afraid of evil tidings; His heart is steadfast, trusting in the Lord.
8 His heart is established; He will not be afraid, Until he sees his desire upon his enemies.
9 He has dispersed abroad, He has given to the poor; His righteousness endures forever; His horn will be exalted with honor.
10 The wicked will see it and be grieved; He will gnash his teeth and melt away; The desire of the wicked shall perish.
He deals with others well and honestly in business and personally. He is ready to help when a need arises and willing to lend. If he has something you need or the ability to help he will assist whoever has a need. He directs his affairs with discretion. If it comes down to a decision of whether to buy something for himself or supply a need for his family he will choose to provide for the family. This is a rare quality today. In modern day America it’s all about “me and mine”. “I’ll do what I want to do and get the things I want”. The good man we read about in Psalm 112 does not think this way. He provides for the needs and wants of others before himself. He is well grounded and unmovable. God through the Apostle Paul admonishes us all to be steadfast and immovable 1 Corinthians 15:58. He is not afraid when rumors of evil things abound. Why? He trusts in God. He relies on the promises found in God’s word. The assuredly that we will be given what we need if see seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness Matthew 6:33. He also knows what is written in Psalm 37:25. All of David’s life he never saw the righteous forsaken or their children begging. The good man knows if bad times do come that in the end all things will work for good for those that love the Lord Romans 8:28. He is steady and sure in his heart. This is the Bible heart. The mind. In his mind there is no doubt or wavering. The good man knows he may have enemies and those who opposed him. However they ultimately will not prevail because God is with him Romans 8:31. Being kind and benevolent is nothing new to him. When opportunity to do good presents itself he doesn’t wait for someone else to step up. He acts Galatians 6:10. James 2:14-17, Matthew 25:31-46. His goodness and righteousness are known and will endure and he is honored. The wicked know of him too and it bothers them greatly.
All Christians need to like the Good Man in Psalm 112. His attributes should abound in all of us.
Today honor and celebrate the Good Man who has influenced life on his special day.
